The Problem
Many educators disapprove of using AI as it can influence the critical thinking that goes into assignments. It's seen as an "easy way out", contrary to others advocating for it as it can open up new dimensions of learning. Making it challenging to create untapped value between the lines in a market full of restrictions and competing beliefs.
Now more than ever educators and students have difficulty balancing the rapidly evolving tech landscape with traditional education. With generative AI tools disrupting classical learning methods, students have found new ways to use them to their advantage. But not without the fear of jeopardizing their academic integrity.
The Work
The main culprit of using AI on assignments is losing your personal voice and touch. Many students now avoid the tools as there's a lack of trust. Due to leading AI tools not actually being built for the assignment process, but for fixing things in their entirety - even if it isn't broken.
With that in mind, as a part of the product team, our work involved finding opportunities for creating meaningful ways for AI to assist a student in their assignment journey. Understanding the many behavioral patterns of studying and identifying where we can facilitate new dimensions of learning without compromising a student's academic integrity. To eventually, design tools that bridge the challenges in the current education and tech landscape.
